INDIANA -- A few recent threads discussing dates of different changes to our game were the catalyst to put together this list of alterations to Indiana high school basketball over the years. Check out this timeline of the more major rule shifts in Hoosier Hysteria...

This is by no means comprehensive. Actually, as I researched this, I ran across hundreds of possible entries, and I have been very arbitrary in making my list. I tried to include what I thought were pretty substantial changes as well as some that I simply found quirky and worth adding. Always welcome to additions.

1894 Free throw added as penalty for fouls
1896 Backboards added to keep fans from interfering with shots
1906 Five players on each team standardized
1906 Open ended baskets standardized
1908 Double dribble considered a violation
1910 Players disqualified after fourth foul
1932 Ten second back court line/rule added
1936 Jump ball after each basket eliminated
******Start of "Modern" Era******
1938 Ten second backcourt rule established
1938 Five timeouts given to each team for use throughout game
1940 Fan shaped backboards allowed
1941 Three second violation added
1944 Players allowed to re-enter game any number of times
1945 Players disqualified after fifth foul
1947 Officials move from solid color broadcloth to standard zebra stripes
1949 Balls without laces become standard
1954 One and one bonus implemented
1955 Free throw lane widened to 12 feet
1961 Sudden death overtime replaced with unlimited 3 min OT's
1962 Distinction made for player control fouls - no charity shots
1963 Clock stopped on all whistles
1967 Dunking in games made illegal
1967 Railroad track center court lines eliminated
1968 Sectional rosters expanded from 10 to 12 players
1970 Dunking during warm-ups ruled illegal
1976 Dunking during games allowed again
1976 Girls IHSAA tourney started
1983 Alternating possessions replace jump balls on tie-ups
1987 Three point line added at 19-9
2008 Six players around free throw lane
