CAIs Hayes Headlines IBCA/Subway Players of the Week

INDIANA -- A 50-point single-game scorer headlines this week's IBCA/Subway Players of the Week.

Aaron Hayes, a senior at Christian Academy of Indiana in New Albany, poured in a school-record 50 points in an 83-82 victory in four overtimes over Christian Academy of Louisville.
Hayes is joined by Plymouth junior Mack Mercer, Rockville senior Lane Mahurin, Portage senior Nicki Monahan, Hamilton Southeastern senior Taya Reimer and New Albany senior Tanner Marcum as recipients in the awards program overseen by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
All six players were recognized for performances during the week of Dec. 31-Jan. 5.
Hayes, a 6-3 forward who claimed boys' District 3 accolades, opened his week with 24 points as Christian Academy defeated Crothersville 75-59. He followed with 50 points -- including 26-of-35 free throws -- plus 13 rebounds as the Warriors improved to 5-5 with the 48-minute decision over Christian Academy of Louisville. Over the two games, he averaged 37.0 points.
The 6-9 Mercer was cited in boys' District 1, and the 6-7 Mahurin was recognized in boys' District 2.
Mercer averaged 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in a pair of wins. First, Mercer scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while hitting 9-of-13 shots, three 3-pointers and 10-of-11 free throws in a 68-51 victory over Elkhart Memorial. He then produced 19 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and three assists in a 63-46 triumph over Tippecanoe Valley.
A second-time Player of the Week winner, Mahurin collected honors after he led Rockville (12-0) to a 48-44 victory over Terre Haute North with 31 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four blocks in a 48-44 victory over Terre Haute North. Earlier in the week, Mahurin was selected to the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic all-tournament team after helping the Rox to the event championship with a 44-39 win over Robinson (Ill.). He scored nine points with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks in that game.
Monahan averaged 32.0 points, Reimer averaged 28.0 points and Marcum averaged 35.0 points in earning respective accolades for girls' Districts 1, 2 and 3.
The 5-9 Monahan poured in a game-high 32 points for Portage (9-6) in her only game of the week, a 56-43 setback to undefeated Merrillville. Monahan became the Indians' fourth career 1,000-point scorer in the game, hitting 11-of-15 shots, 4-of-7 3-pointers and 6-of-8 free throws. She also added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Reimer, a 6-3 forward who has signed to attend Notre Dame, led Hamilton Southeastern (13-2) to victories over Warren Central and McCutcheon. Reimer began her week with 26 points, seven rebounds, eight steals and six blocks in a 61-31 triumph over the Warriors. She followed with 30 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks as the Royals defeated the Mavericks 66-28. For the two games, Reimer sank 21-of-36 shots, including 1-of-3 3-pointers, as well as 13-of-19 free throws.
The 5-6 Marcum is another who reached 1,000 career points during the week as New Albany (6-7) split two games. Marcum reached her scoring milestone with a 38-point effort in a 68-57 loss to Madison. She then dropped in 32 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 69-64 victory over rival Floyd Central in double overtime.
This is the fifth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "play hard and eat fresh."
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA's three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 2. Boys winners be selected from now through the week following March 23.
